Town Funded Work to Lombard Field in West Barnstable Completed

WEST BARNSTABLE – Significant improvements to Lombard Field in West Barnstable have been completed.

The project called for multiple improvements, including fixing drainage problems in the field, moving Luke’s Love Park away from the backstop and out of the path of foul balls, the installation of improved lighting, and expanding the parking lot. Windows at the West Barnstable Community Building were also replaced.

“It was really a bringing together of all the uses of that field and upgrading them so it’ll be able to handle kind of use it’s been getting,” Community Preservation Committee Chairman Lindsay Counsell said.

“That project was a complete remake of the Lombard softball field that involved considerable improvements to the parking area, the relocation of Luke’s Love Playground away from the backstop of the ballfield, connecting the parking area to the old selectmen’s building gallery.”

The $1.7 million project was funded by the Town of Barnstable in 2016. The Community Preservation Committee supported the project with $750,000 in funding with the Town adding on an additional $895,000 from various departments.

Lombard Field is one of the most routinely used town properties, with Luke’s Love Playground consistently filled with children. Certain factions of Town Hall were split on how much funding the project needed before a final decision was reached.

All of Lombard Field and all buildings on the complex are owned by the Lombard Trust and are leased to the Town.
