Harwich Receives Council Grant To Shape Cultural Districts

HARWICH – A $10,000 ‘Communities Cultural District Initiative Grant’ provided by the Massachusetts Cultural Council will allow the Town of Harwich to establish two cultural districts in both Harwich Center, and Harwich Port.

“The money will go towards new signage that each district will need to have as well as maps, websites, and brochures, along with other renovations,” said Cyndi Williams, Harwich Chamber of Commerce Executive Director.

This is all in an effort to put the spotlight on local artists and creative programs around the area, including Whitehouse Field on Oak Street, the Harwich Community Center, Brooks Park, and more.

“As we move forward with this project in these two districts we hope it will bring in a different market to then elongate both sides of the season,” Williams adds.

“We hope to expand upon the international market, and better cater towards the older seasoned traveler that’s looking for arts and culture.”

The town has until next July to use all grant funding provided, with applications for cultural districts being filed with MCC by the end of December.

Meetings have also been set for local officials and business leaders to attend, in an effort to give a voice to those who are in the community as to how this project should run.
