DENNIS – Plans for a veteran’s home in Dennis are moving forward.

Allocating $200,000 in Community Preservation Act funds and a land article to allow the town to use town-owned land on Rt. 134 near Rt. 6A were articles that selectmen and the finance committee supported for the Town Meeting warrant.

Selectmen also voted this week to designate the Cape and Islands Veterans Outreach Center as the preferred developer for the veteran’s housing project pending Town Meeting approval of the lease article.

On Monday, the Dennis Planning Board will hold a public hearing on whether to grant a Special Permit to develop the project as a municipally sponsored project.

Plans call for a five bedroom, colonial style home that will serve homeless veterans in need of transitional housing and other veterans below the poverty line.

“We are building this through charitable donations that are coming in from a variety of organizations and look forward to having something that will be a very nice project for the Town of Dennis,” said Dennis Town Planner Dan Fortier.

Veterans comprise of almost 13 percent of the town’s entire population and 27 percent of those over 65.

“There’s a very large need and we’re hoping that this becomes a model project that other communities across the county will look at and hope that we can reduce the homeless veterans one step at a time,” said Fortier.

On October 1, the Cape and Islands Veterans Outreach Center will host its 3rd annual Charity Golf Tournament with all proceeds benefitting the Dennis Veterans Housing Project.

On the same day, the Center will co-sponsor a Veteran’s Awareness Field Day at the Hyannis Village Green, with part of the funds supporting the project.

The Center hopes to have the home completed and occupied by July 4, 2017.
