Towns, Villages Throughout Cape Remember 9/11

september11BARNSTABLE – Fire departments throughout the Cape will be holding September 11 ceremonies today, the 13th anniversary of the terrorist attacks.

St. Mary’s Church will hold a Day of Remembrance in Barnstable Village with the Barnstable Fire Department. The ceremony will begin at 4 p.m. at the fire station on Route 6A. Barnstable Fire Department Deputy Chief Peter Burke will lead the ceremony.

The featured vocalist is Alayna Rooney, 9, of South Yarmouth, who is a student at Nathaniel H. Wixon Innovation School.

A quiet procession will be led by bagpipes along the Old King’s Highway to St. Mary’s Church.

This will be led by Dave Knauer on the bagpipe, the Barnstable Police Department Color Guard and Barnstable firefighters and dignitaries.

The church will have a 4:30 service featuring patriotic music, special prayers and readings. The featured guest is Cyndy Jones, a Gold Star Mom, who will speak about the Aftermath of 9/11.

A reception will follow in the church garden.

Among other ceremonies, the town of Dennis will unveil its new 9/11 Memorial at 9 a.m. Thursday at Fire Department headquarters, 883 Main St. Speakers will include Dennis Selectman Paul McCormick, Fire Chief Mark Dellner and Deputy Police Chief Peter DiMatteo.

Centerville-Osterville-Marstons Mills Fire Department will hold its annual 9/11 ceremony starting at 9:55 a.m. Thursday in front of the headquarters station, 1875 Route 28. The group will start forming at 9:45 a.m. and the ceremony will end at 10:06 a.m.

The Hyannis Fire Department will hold their event at 10 a.m. Thursday at Hyannis Fire Department Headquarters, 95 High School Road Ext.

The Falmouth Clergy Association and the Upper Cape Chaplaincy will lead Falmouth’s annual 9/11 gathering at 12:30 p.m. Thursday at the Lilly Lobby entrance to Falmouth Hospital, located at 100 Ter Heun Drive. Religious leaders in Falmouth have held annual religious gatherings on Sept. 11 since the 2001 tragedy. During these gatherings, firefighters, police officers, medical workers and other emergency services workers are thanked for their service to the community.

Cape Cod Community College will hold a ceremony with the theme “Remember the Past as We Shape the Future” at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Memorial Tree and Garden on the Cape Cod Community College campus. It will feature a flag-raising by the West Barnstable Fire Department, music and speeches, including opening remarks by college President John Cox and reflections by retired Yarmouth Fire Chief David Akin, now the department chaplain.

The Brewster Fire Department will host a 9/11 remembrance ceremony at Fire Headquarters beginning at 6 p.m. Thursday. Pastor Doug Scalise of Brewster Baptist Church will offer the memorial invocation. Other participants will include the Brewster Police Department, Brewster town officials, Orleans Fire Department, local Scout groups, Veterans of Foreign Wars and other regional emergency service organizations. Tributes to the victims of these tragic events will be shared by 9/11 committee members, the Nauset Regional Middle School Chorus led by Beverly DiPaolo, and select members of the Eddy Elementary School Chorus led by Stacy Faris.

Unity on Cape Cod will hold a World Day of Prayer will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday at Unity on Cape Cod, 147 Walton Ave., Hyannis.
