Tribal Member Objects to NSTAR Spraying

herringBOURNEDALE – A local Indian tribal member is objecting to NSTAR’s use of chemical herbicides in the area of Herring Pond Plantation in Bournedale.

Herring Pond Indian tribal leader Douglas Manter says the land belongs to the tribe and the way they use the property is not consistent with herbicide spraying.

“We as native people take our sustenance from the land.  We take berries, game, such as deer, turkeys, things of that nature. And my son and I have both eaten those berries along where they claim to have sprayed and where they claim they are going to spray in the future.”

Manter says the tribe has dominion over the six thousand acre property; he would like to meet with NSTAR’s legal council in hopes of resolving the matter.
