Troops In The Spotlight Celebration Set for This Weekend

HYANNIS-  Event organizers are gearing up for the 14th annual ‘Troops in the Spotlight’ celebration hosted by Cape Cod Cares for the Troops this Sunday.

The 24-hour event is focused on honoring Veterans, Wounded Warriors, and Gold and Blue Star families with Military personnel standing at attention in one-hour shifts for the full 24 hours.

In addition, volunteers will be collecting items for care packages and monetary donations in order to help cover the cost of shipping the care packages.

This year’s goal is to fill an 18’ truck with supplies and raise $35,000.

“I think it’s important for us to get together and to show our support,” said Cape Cod Cares’ Michelle DeSilva.

Cape Cod Cares for the Troops was started twelve years ago by then 12-year- old Dylan DeSilva. His vision was to send weekly care packages to our troops. Since then, Dylan has sent over 29,000 care packages to our troops overseas, as well as provided aid to wounded warriors and veterans all over the country.

“We never thought we would be doing this 14 years later, and I think it’s gotten bigger because it gives people a way to show the support for our men and women who serve and who are deployed every day for our country,” says DeSilva.

Opening Ceremony is set for Sunday at 11:30am at the K-Mart Plaza on Route 132 in Hyannis.
