Tropical Storm Jose Lingers with Wind and Rain for Cape & Islands

Town Neck Beach in Sandwich

HYANNIS – Tropical Storm Jose has stalled about 170 miles southeast of Cape Cod and it will remain that way until later today, when it will drift west and weaken.

National Weather Service Meteorologist Bill Simpson said showers and high winds could continue into Friday. He also warned people to be careful near the waters.

Simpson expects the storm to generate scattered power outages over the next couple of days.

“Actually the winds will increase during the day tomorrow (Thursday),” said Simpson.

The problem is there are no other weather systems to kick Jose further out to sea.

“It lost it’s steering current, so it’s just going to sit there south of us and kind of meander, no real impetus to go one way or the other, except drifting slowly to the west in a couple of days. It’s going to slowly wind down from  here,” Simpson said.

Jose also continues to cause transportation issues as it lingers off the coast. The Steamship Authority has temporarily suspended its service on the Nantucket Route due to the high winds and rough seas.

Martha’s Vineyard Service continues on a trip-by-trip basis.

Hy-Line Cruises has halted service to Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket Thursday.

All Cape Air flights to and from the Cape and Islands have also been canceled Thursday.

The Barnstable County Regional Emergency Planning committee will once again reopen the Multi-agency Coordination Center this morning as Jose loiters southeast of the Cape and Islands.

The center is a tool for towns on the Cape to request state or county assistance during the storm.

The threat of coastal flooding and 1-2 feet of storm surge along east and southeast-facing beaches remains.

The storm has caused minor outages across the region. More than 500 Eversource customers were without power Wednesday evening after power lines came down on Route 28 in the area of Quanset Road.

Crews worked to restore power to those affected around 11:30. Almost 500 customers in Falmouth and 800 in Plymouth were without power this morning.
