Truck Hits School Bus, Driver Flees

schoolbusDENNIS – Dennis police say a pickup truck hit the back of a school bus full of children this morning near the intersection of Route 28 and Old Main Street in West Dennis.

The crash happened at around 7:55 a.m.

The truck sustained damage and then left the scene of the accident and headed toward Route 134, according to observers.

The bus, owned by First Student, was full of children and was headed to Mattacheese Middle School.

Dennis Fire/Rescue arrived and evaluated the children on the bus, and no injuries are reported at this time. The school bus had some damage to the rear bumper but was able to leave the scene and continue to school.

The bus had stopped at a stop sign when it was hit from the rear by what was described as a white Chevrolet pickup truck with ladder racks. The driver of the truck backed up following the crash and was last seen heading north on Old Main Street.

After police investigated, the bus headed to school, arriving late, according to a school staffer in the administration office. “Thank goodness no one was hurt,” she said.

Police are still looking for the truck and driver.

If anyone has information about the accident or the operator of the Chevrolet truck they are asked to call the Dennis Police Department at 508-394-1313.

The accident is being investigated by Patrolman Elizabeth Tucker.

Citizens are also reminded that information concerning criminal activity in Dennis can be reported anonymously through the Dennis Police Department Crime Tip Hotline at 774-352-1500.
