Truro to Hold Special Election for Select Board Seat

TRURO – A special election will be held in Truro on February 18 to fill a vacant Select Board seat.

The seat was previously held by Maureen Burgess, who died last month at the age of 72.

The board was initially split on filling the seat prior to the annual general election on May 12, until Select Board member Robert Weinstein said he would make sure any 2-2 ties could be broken.

“There are too many important things going forward, where I feel that we would, as a board, be doing a disservice to have things, in effect, set aside if we didn’t have unanimity,” Weinstein said.

Town Manager Rae Ann Palmer broke down the price tag of a special election.

“I would say on the low end, about $1,200. On the higher end, about $1,800,” she explained.

“Our budget could absorb that, at this point.”

The winner of the special election will be on the board until the general election, a total of just 52 days between the two votes.
