Truro to Try Resident-Only Parking at Town Beach Next Summer

TRURO – A few resident-only parking spaces will be set aside next summer at a Truro beach as an experiment that could offer benefits to locals.

They would be available to year-round residents, registered voters and property owners.

“Having been accused for the last several months of being divisive, I’m a little bit sensitive to advancing policy that could be perceived as excluding certain groups of people from using resources in town,” said Selectman Jay Coburn.

Originally some town officials wanted to set aside 40 spaces at Coast Guard Beach, but agreed to 10 to see what feedback they would receive from residents.

During the summer, almost all of the town’s beaches require a vehicle parking sticker.

“Six other Cape towns also have some form of resident-only parking for access to beaches and if the town did it, it’s pretty much no cost to the town,” said Beach Commission Chair Eliza Harned.
