Truro Voters To Decide Full-Time Firefighters Proposal, Contested Selectmen’s Race

KA_Truro_Town Meeting_042616_013TRURO – The town of Truro could move to a full-time fire department if a tax increase is approved at town election today.

A yes vote on question two would allow the town to assess an additional $241,000 in property and real estate taxes to fund the hiring of 6 full-time firefighters. The fire station is currently staffed 24 hours a day, but with per-diem firefighters who are not eligible for benefits.

If approved, it would be the first time in Truro’s history that the town would have a full-time department.

A second proposition two and a half funding question would pay for repairs at East Harbor.

In the race for two seats on the Board of Selectmen, incumbents Robert Weinstein and Paul Wisotzky are facing a challenge from Paul Kiernan. Both seats carry a three-year term.

Residents will also vote on nine amendments to the town charter approved by Town Meeting.

Polls are open until 8 pm at the Truro Community Center.
