PROVINCETOWN – Rescue teams from the Center for Coastal Studies freed a leatherback sea turtle that was entangled last week in Cape Cod Bay.
The 6-foot long female was one of five leatherbacks that became entangled during a two-day stretch. Scientists believe the increase in entanglement activity comes as the animals start to migrate south.
“We are seeing a large influx of leatherbacks in our waters here off Cape Cod and are requesting local community help by reporting any turtle entangled or in trouble,” said Bob Lynch with the Center’s Marine Animal Entanglement Response Team. “Through the public’s assistance we can gain unique insight into these creatures as well as assisting an endangered species.”
Mariners are asked to report any entangled or animals in distress by contacting the Coast Guard or calling the Center for Coastal Studies at 800-900-3622.
