massachusetts state houseWEYMOUTH, Mass. (AP) — Candidates vying for a vacant state Senate seat are making their final pitches to voters.

Republican Patrick O’Connor and Democrat Joan Meschino will be on the ballot in Tuesday’s special election in the Plymouth and Norfolk District.

Republican Robert Hedlund represented the district until his election as mayor of Weymouth in November.

O’Connor is president of the Weymouth Town Council and previously served as Hedlund’s legislative director.

Meschino is an attorney and former selectwoman in the town of Hull.

The district also includes Cohasset, Duxbury, Hingham, Marshfield and Scituate.

A special election is also scheduled to fill the seat formerly held by Anthony Petrucelli, an East Boston Democrat who left the Senate to join a lobbying firm. Joseph Boncore of Winthrop won last month’s Democratic primary and has no Republican opponent.
