HYANNIS – The unemployment rate continues to drop on the Cape and the Islands and across the state.
The Massachusetts Executive office of Labor and Workforce Development Department of Unemployment Assistance has released unemployment figures for September.
In Barnstable County, the unemployment rate in September was down to 3.3 percent, compared to 4.9 percent in September of 2015. The rate is also down 0.1 percent from August.
“I think this is the end result of the great recession of 2008 finally washing out, there really are no effects left from that,” said David Augustinho, executive director of the Cape and Islands Workforce Investment Board. “Our economy is going at a pretty good clip.”
The statewide unemployment rate was 3.3 percent in September which was down from 3.8 percent in August and 4.9 percent in September of 2015.
The unemployment rate for Bristol County was 4.1 percent in September which was down from 6 percent a year ago and 0.6 percent from August.
Plymouth County’s unemployment rate is close to the state average at 3.5 percent compared to 5.1 percent last September.
Unemployment is under five percent on the Islands. Dukes County unemployment is down to 2.8 percent. The rate was 4.4 percent in September of 2015 and 2.7 percent in August. The rate on Nantucket is 1.9 percent compared to 1.8 percent in August and 2.9 percent in March of 2015.
Looking ahead, Augustinho is confident in good numbers for the Cape and Islands.
“I think we’ll be in relatively better shape than we were through last winter,” said Augustinho.
