Unemployment Numbers Drop for Cape and Islands in December

unemploymentHYANNIS – December’s unemployment numbers are in and they’re continuing on a downward trend for the Cape and Islands.

Barnstable County saw the unemployment rate for the month of December drop from 7.1 percent in 2014 to 6.8 percent in December 2015.

Numbers in December 2015 continued to drop from those in December 2014 for Plymouth, Nantucket, Dukes and Bristol Counties.

Plymouth went from 5.1 percent to 4.8 percent, Nantucket dropped 7.9 percent to 7.5 percent, Dukes declined from 9.2 percent to 8.8 percent, and Bristol went from 6.2 percent to 5.8 percent last month.

There still continues to be a labor force shortage in Barnstable County, with a drop from 108,071 in December of last year to 107,094 last month.

“Across the board all of our employers are now finding it difficult to find employees,” said Cape and Islands Workforce Investment Board Executive Director David Augustinho.

Barnstable County isn’t the only county in the state to see a drop in labor force numbers.

Plymouth County went from 268,254 in December 2014 to 266,079 in December 2015.

“There is not a large labor pool available for our employers, so we are in a period of labor shortages,” said Augustinho.
