Unemployment Numbers Drop for Cape and Islands in October

unemploymentHYANNIS – The Cape and Islands’ jobs outlook is continuing to improve with the latest unemployment numbers in from last month.

Barnstable County saw the unemployment rate for the month of October drop from 4.5 percent in 2015 to 2.7 percent in October 2016.

Numbers in October 2016 continued to drop from those in October 2015 for Plymouth, Nantucket, Dukes and Bristol Counties.

Plymouth went from 4.6 percent to 2.8 percent, Nantucket dropped 3.4 percent to 2 percent, Dukes declined from 5.1 percent to 2.8 percent, and Bristol went from 5.4 percent to 3.4 percent last month.

“It just seems that nobody is sitting on the sidelines, everybody is coming to work,” said David Augustino, the executive director of the Cape and Islands Workforce Investment Board.

More Barnstable County residents are finding employment as compared to last year.

In October 2015, there were over 104,000 employed, but last month, more than 107,000 found work.

Barnstable County isn’t the only county in the state to see an increase in labor force numbers.

Plymouth County went from 254,427 in October 2015 to 261,045 last month.

“The national numbers are similar in that last week’s new unemployment claims filed, was the lowest weekly number since 1973,” said Augustinho.
