Unemployment Rate Continues to Drop on the Cape and Islands

unemploymentHYANNIS – There’s more good news for the Cape and Islands economy as the unemployment rate fell in the month August.

The unemployment rate for Barnstable County dropped to 4.2 percent compared to 5.2 percent in August 2014.

The unemployment rate was 4.7 percent in July 2015.

Cape and Islands Workforce Investment Board Executive Director David Augustinho believes the numbers reflect what is happening in the economy.

“The fact is that construction has been the last sector to really recover coming out of the great recession of the 2009 period, and I think it’s just increasingly stronger and stronger as we go forward,” said Augustinho.

Statewide, the unemployment rate dropped to 4.5 percent, compared to 5.7 percent in August 2014 and 4.9 percent in July 2015.

Bristol County has one of the highest unemployment rates in the state but saw a drop from 7.1 percent in August 2014 to 5.6 in August 2015.

Nantucket has the lowest unemployment rate in Massachusetts at 2.3 percent, a drop from 3 percent in August 2014.

“The high point of employment for us in the last decade or so, certainly was in the beginning of 2008, late 2007 before the recession really took hold, so anything that harkens back to those numbers, is definitely really positive for us,” said Augustinho.
