HYANNIS – The union representing 31,000 Stop & Shop employees currently on strike has set up a GoFundMe page.

The United Food and Commercial Workers Union (UFCW) launched the online fundraising effort on Wednesday, collecting nearly $20,000 in donations thus far.

The strike began on April 11, after months of negotiations between the UFCW and Stop & Shop executives over employee pay and benefits fell through.

In a statement on the GoFundMe page, the UFCW writes, “Your donations to this strike fund will be used to assist Stop & Shop strikers facing hardships.”

Stop and Shop operates 12 stores on Cape Cod along with two on Nantucket and two on Martha’s Vineyard.

The grocery store chain, with over 400 stores in the northeast, saw the latest contract between the company and employees expire in late February. It had been in effect since 2016.
