Urgent Care Services When You Need Them

HYANNIS – Al Wilson, age 96, launched a lifelong love of sailing as a summer kid exploring Woods Hole waters in a Cape Cod Knockabout. He moved to Falmouth in 1967 and served for
many years as a Corporator of Falmouth Hospital. While Al and his wife Helen have put their sailing days behind them, they find themselves very fortunate to live in a community with access to
exceptional health care, most recently through visits to the Urgent Care Center. They have great appreciation for the professionalism and care that they receive at the center.

“We’ve gone to Urgent Care all times of the year,” said Helen. “Even in the summer when business is brisk we’re always greeted by caregivers who are efficient and have a calm, comforting presence. Another advantage is knowing that Hospital Emergency Center physicians rotate through the center to work.”

Their visits began when the couple adopted a nine-year-old cat named Lilly to be a companion to Al, who has dementia. Lilly is very affectionate, but can get a little feisty when patted in a way that doesn’t agree with her expectations.

Lilly enjoys sitting on Al’s lap but he doesn’t always recognize her subtle hints when she no longer wishes to be patted. So, she nips his hand to get his attention. Helen noticed Al’s skin,
which is very fragile, had developed red marks and was concerned they were a sign of infection. It was a weekend and she didn’t want to wait until Monday to contact their primary care physician. She also felt it was not serious enough to go to Hospital Emergency Center.

Helen chose to take Al to the Urgent Care Center and was relieved to find out the bites weren’t infected and grateful the physician started Al on a course of antibiotics as a precaution.

“The Urgent Care Center relieved the anxiety over what to do,” said Helen. “I didn’t want to wait for a diagnosis. And, I didn’t want to go to the emergency room because I was pretty confident it didn’t require intensive medical attention.”

Helen appreciates the calm environment of the center. “I think the urgent care setting is comforting, low-key and feels much like going to your doctor’s office.” While the couple has utilized the Urgent Care Center on many occasions, she stresses their main health care is still provided by their primary care physician.

“It gives us such peace of mind to have a full service healthcare system available without having to drive to Boston,” said Helen.
