Vaccination Recommended As Flu Season Arrives

TOBEY – Although the peak of flu season has not yet arrived, doctors from Southcoast Health are seeing an increase in cases.  The occurrence of Type A strains of the virus, which are difficult to vaccinate against, is increasing dramatically.

The vaccine effectiveness last year was 39%, but the Centers for Disease Control says getting vaccinated can reduce the risk by 40-60%.  Tens of millions of doses are distributed each year, which the makers try to match with active strains.

Dr. Robert Caldas, Southcoast’s Chief Medical Officer, says getting vaccinated is safe for people over six months old, including pregnant women, and those 65 or older can receive a double dose.  The shots are available at all four of their hospitals, including Tobey in Wareham.

While up to 36,000 people die each year from the disease,  millions more are saved.

Prevention tips include the frequent washing of hands, coughing or sneezing into your elbow, and disinfecting hard surfaces.

Remember that flu can be spread to others who are up to six feet away.
