HYANNIS – Middle school students from Barnstable, Bourne and Provincetown displayed their interpretive art at Barnstable Airport for Veterans Day this week.
A closing reception was held on Tuesday night with veterans and students at the airport to celebrate the 30 works of art titled “From the Words of Warriors II.”
The artwork will be on display until Friday.
“I think it’s just a good collaboration, they learn to appreciate better what the veterans go through, what type of a life they lead, the experiences they’ve had good, bad and indifferent, and certainly gives them another option on what they might want to do with themselves in the future,” said Airport Manager Bud Breault.
The artwork represents the student’s interpretations of veterans’ service during wartime and peacetime, based on in-person interviews the students conducted during the “Wings of Freedom” exhibit at the airport in September.
Bourne Middle School art teacher Dineen D’Avena said she was proud of her students’ work.
“The conversation in class was really neat,” said D’Avena. “I think that they felt it was an honor to be invited and then to see the work transform in front of them.”
The artwork by the students was done by watercolors, pen and ink, sculpture and acrylic.
