Veterans Day A Chance for Solemn Tributes

Tuesday, November 11 is Veterans Day and towns throughout the Cape will be holding Veterans Day ceremonies and tributes.

Upper Cape

BOURNE – Operation Flags for Vets has placed flags on all 57,000 graves at the Massachusetts National Cemetery. Volunteers are needed to remove the flags Nov. 16. Operation Flags for Vets is a program of the SFC Jared C. Monti Charitable Foundation. Donations to help with purchase of the flags may be mailed to Paul Monti, 408 Center St., Raynham, MA 02767.

FALMOUTH – The 60th anniversary of Falmouth’s first Veterans Day ceremony will be observed at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Falmouth Public Library lawn, 300 Main St. Participants include keynote speaker Maj. Gen. Stephen P. Gross, U.S. Air Force; state and local dignitaries; the 102nd Intelligence Wing from Joint Base Cape Cod; Falmouth Fire Rescue Department Color Guard; Falmouth Police Department Honor Guard; Brian Boru Pipe Band; and Scouting organizations. Refreshments will follow at Falmouth Elks Lodge, 140 Palmer Ave. A blood drive honoring all veterans will be from noon to 6 p.m. at John Wesley United Methodist Church, 270 Gifford St., sponsored by Marine Lodge AF&AM.

MASHPEE – The town of Mashpee will hold its annual Veterans Day ceremony at 10 a.m. Tuesday, rain or shine, at Mashpee High School, 500 Old Barnstable Road. A light breakfast will follow in the school cafeteria.

Mid Cape

BARNSTABLE – The Annual Town of Barnstable Soldiers Veterans’ Day Program will take place on Tuesday, November 11. The Parade will form next to the Town Hall Building, extending back to the Village Green. It will begin with a volley by the Yarmouth Minutemen at 9:58 AM. The Parade steps off at 10 a.m.

Marching in this year’s Parade will be: The NamVets Association of Cape Cod and the Islands, Korean War Veterans Association – Chapter 1, VFW Post 2578, American Legion Post #206, Marine Corps League Detachment 125, Veterans for Peace, Town of Barnstable Police Honor Guard, Hyannis Fire Department Color Guard, COMM Fire Department Color Guard, Yarmouth Minutemen, Town of Barnstable Dignitaries, Barnstable High School Marching Band and more.

A program following the Parade will take place on the Village Green Bandstand. The program will include the Placement of Wreaths honoring those who lost their lives in World War I, World War II, Korean, Vietnam and Gulf Wars and Town Council President Jessica Rapp Grassetti and Keynote Speaker Colonel Timothy A. Mullen, State Quartermaster, Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

In Barnstable Village, there will be a Veterans Day service at 9 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, Route 6A. The service will feature special prayers, patriotic music and hymns. The Rev. Mark Anschutz will preside. Veterans are encouraged to wear uniforms or anything that identifies their service.

DENNIS – AmVets Post 333 Cape Cod’s 10th annual Veterans Day ceremony will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Merrill Memorial Park, Route 28, West Dennis, with the theme “Honor all who served and are serving.” Don Costa will be master of ceremonies. At 11 a.m. a procession will cross Bass River Bridge to Veterans Memorial Park, Packet Landing, Route 28, South Yarmouth.

Also in Dennis, the second annual Field of Honor will be open for viewing from dawn through dusk  through Tuesday at Johnny Kelley Park, 168 Old Bass River Road, South Dennis. The sea of 3-by-5-foot American flags is a tribute to service members, veterans, police, firefighters and other local or personal heroes. All proceeds support AmVets Post 333 of Cape Cod.

Lower Cape

HARWICH – The town of Harwich will hold a Veterans Day ceremony at Island Pond Cemetery, on Island Pond Road, at 11 a.m. Tuesday. Town Administrator Robert Lawton will be guest speaker, and Harwich Scouts will lead the Pledge of Allegiance.

Also in Harwich, a Veterans Day celebration will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at EPOCH Senior Healthcare of Harwich, 111 Headwaters Drive. Life Choice Hospice and EPOCH will honor veterans with memorial ceremony. Refreshments will be served. RSVP: 508-430-6208.

CHATHAM – The town of Chatham will hold a Veterans Day ceremony at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Veterans Circle, also known as the Main Street Rotary. The parade will form at 10:30 at Veterans Field parking lot next to Chatham Community Center and proceed down Main Street. Participants will include members of the Chatham VFW and American Legion, the Ladies Auxiliary to the Chatham VFW, the Chatham Coast Guard, the Coast Guard Auxiliary and local Scouts. In the event of inclement weather the ceremony will be held at the Community Center.

Outer Cape

TRURO – A Veterans Day ceremony will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Truro Council on Aging at Truro Community Center, 7 Standish Way, North Truro. Photos and brief stories about veterans either living or related to someone living in Truro will be shared.
