HYANNIS – Hundreds of veterans arrived on Cape Cod Sunday on the Cape Flyer – the train which runs seasonally on the weekends from South Station in Boston to Hyannis.

The ride was free for vets, as they made their way to a celebration in their honor at the Kmart parking lot.

The ceremony featured a rotating set of soldiers standing at attention for 24 hours to honor the fallen.

There was a barbecue, kids’ tent and car show too.

An Iraq/Afghanistan Memorial Wall was also on display, along with a host of military vehicles.

Participants wrote and recorded messages for troops currently deployed overseas.

Veterans were allowed to bring along a guest for the excursion.

Vietnam veteran of the Army Phil Hunt, of Dorchester, said it meant a lot to him to be invited to the celebration.

“I was very lucky, I wasn’t in infantry, but it was still war,” he said. “I’m glad I’m a veteran now, it means something.”
