Veterans Organizations to Gather for Regional Vet Expo

YARMOUTH – The Cape Cod Vet Center will host the 2nd annual Regional Veterans Expo this weekend at Dennis-Yarmouth Regional High School.

The expo is Saturday, October 13 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and will feature information about Veteran’s benefits and services available, including health care, disability claims, burials, home loans, employment, hospice, and mental health service.

“It’s just a chance for Veterans and their families to come down and learn about the multitude of resources that are available to them, and benefits and entitlements that are available to them, right here on the Cape,” said Dr. Jocelyn Howard, the director of the Cape Cod Vet Center.

Howard said returning home from tours of combat can be isolating.

“It can be a struggle for folks to just kind of pick up from where they left off before deployment and move forward with re-integrating with the community, maybe finding work, maybe folks are moving to a new location,” Howard said.

One of the purposes of the event is also to make it easier for Veterans to get through all of the paperwork and bureaucracy to receive benefits.

The expo is open to everyone, including friends and family members of Veterans.

Representatives from the Vet Center, the Hyannis VA, Providence VA Regional Benefits Office and the Massachusetts National Cemetery will be at the expo from 10 to 2 tomorrow, along with employers and other organizations which serve area Veterans.

The Hyannis VA clinic serves more than 4,000 area Veterans and hosts more than 19,000 outpatient visits annually.

The Cape Cod Vet Center is one of the two VA facilities on Cape Cod, both located in Hyannis.

The center provides services for Veterans and their families and help with benefits and referral information. It also provides readjustment counseling for Veterans who may have served overseas in combat or may have experienced military sexual trauma.
