FALMOUTH – Voters in the 3rd Barnstable District returned Republican David Vieira to Beacon Hill in Tuesday’s election.

The CapeCod.com NewsCenter called the race for Vieira early Wednesday morning after results from the town of Falmouth came in. His opponent, Democrat Matt Patrick, did not concede the race, saying he would wait until Wednesday morning before making any decision. Patrick cited the desire to wait for early voting election results, which were delayed but were ultimately released around midnight.

Vieira said he would not officially declare victory until receiving a concession from Patrick.

“I wish Mr. Patrick would get on the phone and concede the race, but he hasn’t and we will not declare victory until he does,” Vieira said.

Vieira garnered 12,474 votes, while Patrick received 11,297. Vieira won in all three towns in the district, Falmouth, Bourne, and Mashpee.

The race was a rematch of a 2010 contest that saw Vieira unseat Patrick on Beacon Hill.

Vieira cited the opioid crisis as the major issue he will work on when he returns to the State House in January.

“We will continue to work on the opioid crisis by trying to bring long-term treatment beds to the Cape, and dealing with primary prevention as well,” Vieira said.

This will be Vieira’s fourth term on Beacon Hill.
