Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C.
WAREHAM – A smaller version of the Vietnam War Veterans’ Memorial wall in Washington, D.C. will be coming to the Wareham area this summer.
The Moving Wall displays the names of veterans who lost their lives during the Vietnam conflict.
Selectmen unanimously approved the Veterans Council’s request last week to bring the wall to the area for five to six days, during which time it will be available for viewing 24 hours a day.
In one emotional moment during the meeting, Selectman Judith Whiteside explained that she has seen the wall in Washington and cannot view it again.
She said that while it is a painful reminder of those she lost to the war, she is glad the symbol will be brought to the area.
“I can’t look at it, sorry, but I’d be happy to support it,” Whiteside said.
Veterans Council Chairman Bob White pointed out that The Moving Wall has been to nearby towns like Falmouth and Fairhaven.
The selectmen plan on perhaps opening up the exhibit as a tri-town effort, including Bourne and Marion in the process.
The $5,000 cost of transportation and installation should easily be covered, selectmen said. After that, it is the sole responsibility of the host town to care for the exhibit.
The council is aiming to have the wall in the area by July or August.
