SANDWICH – A memorial to the service of the military branches that fought in the Vietnam War is set to be unveiled Sunday in observance of Veterans Day.
The memorial was approved after a long consideration of the plan by the Sandwich Historic District, which signed on in mid-September. The monument was approved at town meeting and all other committees before running into the Historic District Committee which wavered on the idea for several weeks.
The black memorial stone has been engraved with all branches of the military that took part in Vietnam including the Navy, Air Force, Army, Marines, Coast Guard and Merchant Marines. Just under 60,000 service members were killed in the conflict.
The unveiling will take place as the stone is placed at Eaton Square adjacent to Town Hall on Sunday.
