Vineyard Wind Conducting Nautical Survey

NEW BEDFORD – The F/V Justice is headed out to sea to conduct a survey of the 420 square miles where Vineyard Wind plans to construct a wind farm, the location is about 15 miles south of Martha’s Vineyard.

Researchers from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth School for Marine Science and Technology are using video trawl survey equipment to examine the fishery in the Vineyard Wind lease area and an adjacent control area for pre and post-construction studies.

Survey data for commercially important species will provide estimates for the numbers and species of fish in both areas and will also provide information to compare the construction and control areas.

Vineyard Wind is planning an 800 megawatt offshore wind facility in federal waters, the company says the project will generate enough electricity to power 400,00 homes. The company is on track to begin in state construction of the first large scale wind farm in the U.S. beginning in 2019.
