ORLEANS – The Cape Cod Climate Change Collaborative is formally endorsing the Vineyard Wind project.
The nation’s first large-scale offshore wind energy project 14 miles south of Martha’s Vineyard will be able to generate 800 megawatts of clean energy, which is enough to power more than 400,000 homes.
Executive Director Mon Cochran said the project will make major strides to generate clean, renewable energy for the region and help mitigate climate change.
“Climate change poses existential threats to our environment, human health, and the economy – indeed, our entire way of life on Cape Cod,” Cochran said.
“The Cape’s fishing industry will be especially impacted by warming water, which means cold water fish species will leave the area in search of cooler water or become extinct. It’s imperative that we change our energy sources to a low-carbon mix containing a significant amount of renewable energy, starting yesterday.”
The Collaborative’s board carefull followed the project and is impressed with Vineyard Wind’s efforts to mitigate possible environmental impacts and community concerns.
The project has developed community agreements and has committed $15 million for several initiatives across the Cape and Islands to recruit, mentor and train local workers for careers in the new offshore wind industry.
The Cape Cod Climate Change Collaborative is a consortium of Cape and Islands-based organizations and individuals whose mission is to unite available resources, organizations and intelligence to mitigate climate change impacts on Cape Cod, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and work toward achieving “net zero”-based goals for the region.
