VINEYARD HAVEN – One of the companies looking to build a wind farm off the coast of Martha’s Vineyard will conduct a series of undersea surveys starting in April.
Vineyard Wind is looking for geological and ecological information to help with the permitting process for the proposed 800-megawatt offshore wind farm 14 miles south of the island.
The surveying will begin on Monday and will continue into the summer.
Vineyard Wind has previously conducted two similar surveys, and this effort will be the most extensive survey to date.
The company will be conducting seafloor sampling, video surveys, and boring and sonar samples of some of the possible routes for submarine cables and the proposed turbine site.
The effort will involve at least six vessels operated out of New Bedford, Hyannis, and Vineyard Haven.
A shellfish survey will also be conducted in Lewis Bay, one of the potential routes to bring the power generated by the turbines to shore.
Vineyard Wind is planning additional studies after these surveys are complete, including fisheries and benthic studies.
The company was one of several projects to apply for federal and state construction permits in December.
