MASHPEE – The Board of Selectmen in Mashpee will continue visioning sessions this month to discuss planned expansion of Mashpee Commons and the development of central Mashpee.
The sessions will bring together town regulatory and advisory boards and the public and begin with an in-depth look at wastewater plans.
Selectman Andrew Gottlieb said the issue of managing wastewater is paramount to moving forward with development in the town.
“We’ll spend the first meeting with a briefing from our wastewater engineers on what the town’s actual plan is and it’ll be an opportunity to educate all regulatory boards within the Town of Mashpee and the public at large about what we have in the works,” Gottlieb said.
Gottlieb said it is a positive sign that the town is using the conversation about development and redevelopment of the central business district to finally set a path forward for managing wastewater.
Along with wastewater, the sessions will look into transportation, housing, community spaces, zoning, retail and town character.
Chair of the Board of Selectmen Carol Sherman said the meetings will focus on more than just Mashpee Commons.
“It’s about the vision of what everybody in the room is looking at for the town of Mashpee – the area around the commons,” Sherman said. “We have housing issues and we need to look at the whole picture and not just part of it.”
Sherman said this is finally an opportunity to bring all town officials together.
“I think this is a start and we have a few months before we get ready for town meeting,” Sherman said.
Sherman said once a vision is established officials can begin to look at zoning changes prior to town meeting.
The visioning sessions began last month and continue Monday and Tuesday.
