Visitors Pack Cape Cod For Independence Day Activities

fireworksHYANNIS – The Fourth of July holiday attracted big numbers of visitors to Cape Cod this past weekend – with many businesses reporting brisk sales and full hotels.

And many of those tourists made the trek back off-Cape Sunday afternoon – with a 12 mile backup at one point heading to the Sagamore Bridge.

It was a bit more manageable for those who used the Bourne Bridge. A weekend of Independence Day activities was punctuated with fireworks last night in Orleans.

Nationwide, the American Automobile Association said 41.9 million Americans would travel 50 miles or more from home this past weekend, the most since 2007.

“This Independence Day, more people will get in their cars, board airplanes, and take trains and cruise ships to celebrate our nation’s freedom with friends and family,” said Lloyd P. Albert, AAA Northeast Senior Vice President of Public and Government Affairs.
