Annual Holiday Wreath Laying Planned for National Cemetery in Bourne

BOURNE – Thousands of holiday wreaths will be placed on the graves of fallen soldiers at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne on Saturday.

Organizer Captain Dennis Mills said the the wreaths were on the way last week.

“Right now, we’re expecting the wreaths.  They should be delivered next week, and the ceremony itself is on the 16th,” he said.

The effort started in Bourne in 2007, but Mills said the tradition goes back much further than that.

“It all began with the Worcester (Maine) Wreath Company in the early 90’s, and then over the years it became a national event.  There’s national cemeteries in each state,” he said.

In previous years, over 700,000 have been laid.  To buy a wreath or to donate, go to wreathsacrossamerica.org and search for the National Cemetery in Bourne.
