MASHPEE – In case of an emergency or disaster, there could be many volunteers that want to donate their time to help others in need.

The Cape Cod Citizen Corps Council held an emergency drill at the Mashpee Wampanoag Community and Government Center yesterday to deal with that issue, training their members with mock volunteers in case of a regional emergency.

The council has created the Volunteer Reception Center concept to register and refer volunteers to local agencies.

“I’m just helping the people who are running the drill go through the paces of taking someone who comes in unexpectedly to help during disasters,” said volunteer participant Janet O’Leary.

Amy Alati, Chairwoman of the Cape Cod Citizen Corps Council, said that this is their second drill, and that all the drills are important.

“We never know what’s going to happen. We can’t predict the future, but we know that we’ve already drilled for so many things, whether it’s weather related. We’ve had a pandemic on Cape Cod with H1N1. All of these things are possibilities,” said Alati.

This fall, a training session and drill will be held for the Lower Cape at the Harwich Community Center.
