Voters Support Battery Storage Facility Project in Provincetown

PROVINCETOWN – Plans for a 25-megawatt battery storage facility in Provincetown has been approved by town voters.

At the second night of town meeting on Tuesday, voters authorized the Select Board to begin negotiations with Eversource to install the facility the town’s transfer station.

The battery storage facility is expected to help reduce power outages and keep lights in town working during those outages.

Eversource Director of Clean Energy Development Charlotte Ancel said the batteries would serve around 11,000 customers. Over the last five years, Ancel said those customers have seen about 45,000 hours of outages.

“The project is a large battery that will serve as a backup power source when the main line that serves customers from Wellfleet to Provincetown that runs along Route 6 goes down,” Ancel explained.

“When that line goes down, if the battery is in place it will ensure that there are virtually no customers out, it will provide a backup source of power for as many as ten hours in the winter and three hours in the summer.”

The clean energy lithium-ion batteries would be able to provide 10 hours or more of electricity for the communities of Wellfleet, Truro and Provincetown in the event of an outage.

The proposed facility must still gain approval from the Conservation Commission and Planning Board, state and regional agencies before it’s officially allowed to be installed.

“At Eversource we’re really excited. The Town of Provincetown voted in a very strong vote in favor of advancing the project,” said Ancel.

“Our next step is to file a local permit with the town where they’ll look at all of the details of the project. We’ll also file with the Cape Cod Commission.”

If approved, Eversource would issue an annual fair-market lease payment to Provincetown for 25 years and would be given the option of two 10-year extensions.
