HARWICH – A series of upcoming nature walks will explore the centuries-old native lands of the Monomoyick Territory, in an attempt to gain a better understanding of life for native people in the region in the 17th century.

The events are being sponsored by the Native Land Conservancy and the local land trusts of Orleans, Harwich, and Chatham. Marcus Hendricks, a 12th generation Cape Codder and a native Nipmuc and Wampanoag, will guide participants on the walks.

Hendricks will share stories about the lives of the First People and how they were dramatically changed with the arrival of European settlers.

The first walk, on September 11th at 10 a.m., will be at the barrier beach at Ragged Neck. Participants will learn about Champlain’s 1606 arrival at Stage Harbor.

On September 18th at 10 a.m., walkers will explore Monomoit Bay, where Squanto and Governor William Bradford likely visited in 1622 to negotiate for corn.

The final event, on September 25th at 10 a.m., will be a short trail at Paw Wah Point, where the historic Portanimicut community will be in focus.

To participate, there is a one-time fee of $45.00. Registration is available at www.HarwichConservationTrust.org. Space is limited.

The Native Land Conservancy was founded in 2013 and is the first native-led land trust operating east of the Mississippi River.
