Mashpee Wampanoag Elections Held This Weekend

MASHPEE – The Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe held its tribal elections over the weekend, with six members elected to the Tribal Council.

Brian Weeden, Rita Pocknett Gonsalves, Carlton Hendricks, Winnie Johnson Graham, Aaron Tobey, Jr., and Yvonne Avant were all elected. There were 472 total ballots cast.

The elections took place as the tribe continues its fight to have land taken into trust for a planned billion dollar casino project in Taunton.

The elections came amid recent concerns over Tribal Chairman Cedric Cromwell’s personal finance situation which resulted in a vote of no confidence in his leadership. That issue resulted in Cromwell being stripped of his financial authority over tribe business in January but he was given back fiduciary authority after an investigation found no evidence of wrongdoing.

Councilors Hendricks and Tobey have been critical of Cromwell and say they will move to keep the pressure on Cromwell and assure he is accountable for decisions made in his role as Chairman.
