Wampanoag Language School Moves to Tribal Grounds

MASHPEE – In an attempt to allow for easier commutes for family and students, the Wompanaak Language Reclamation Project’s language immersion school has moved to tribal grounds.

The school was previously at the Montessori Academy of Cape Cod in North Falmouth and launched in early September with 12 students.

Now the school will be located at the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribal Government and Community Center.

“This move was accomplished during the latter half of November and has cut the meeting time of our parents and children down to just a few minutes a day versus over an hour a day, which is what our families are experiencing from the Mashpee area,” said School Director Jennifer Weston.

Language classes are currently being held for adults in the evenings at the location.

A three-year, $890,000 grant from the Administration for Native Americans was issued to the school in September.

The grant allows the immersion school to accept up to 35 students from pre-kindergarten to first grade and funds the training of four individuals to become full-time Montessori teachers.

Ten students are currently enrolled but the school has the capacity for 14.

Weston said that she is thankful for the move, since the commute was becoming too much for parents.

“Certainly being more closer and convenient for our families was a huge priority for us and we had actually lost a couple of students since the beginning of the school year, just in September,” said Weston.

Since the move, five parents have expressed their interest in enrolling their children.

The pre-school and kindergarten class will continue into next year and as the school grows, they could look at other facilities on tribal land.
