Wareham Officials Report Potential Great White Shark Sighting in Cape Cod Canal

WAREHAM – In the aftermath of the first fatal shark attack in Massachusetts in over 80 years, the Wareham Department of Natural Resources is alerting the public of a potential great white shark sighting in the Cape Cod Canal.

The department says on its official Facebook page that it received a report of the sighting on Sunday, stating that the report estimated the shark to be up to 12 feet in length.

The last known location of the shark was in between Stony Point Dike and Wings Neck, in the former Cape Cod Canal cut of Bourne.

The Department says “We are posting this just to raise awareness and no beach closures are in place at this time.”

Wareham DNR also inform the public that Ocean Sunfish (Mola Mola) begin to arrive in Massachusetts waters during this time of year. They have a very large dorsal fin that is often visible above the surface of the ocean, and can be mistaken for as sharks.
