Wareham Police Make Arrests After Fight Involving a Machete

WAREHAM – Wareham Police arrested two men after a machete was allegedly used during an altercation near Onset Avenue and East Boulevard Friday afternoon in Wareham.

Police responded to the disturbance which involved several males fighting around 1:30 p.m.

Officers were told that a man wielding a machete during the fight left the scene in a blue Chrysler Sebring.

Police pulled the identified vehicle over a mile from the scene on Route 6 and 28 in the area of the 99 Restaurant.

The vehicle was driven by Kohlbey Hammond, 22, of Onset, and a search of the vehicle uncovered a black machete in the backseat which was underneath some clothes.

Hammond told police that his car was struck by a rock on Onset Avenue near the Point Independence Bridge and that he pulled over to confront a man he believed to have thrown the rock.

A passenger in the vehicle, Aurthor Mpofu, 20, of West Wareham, told police he grabbed the machete from the vehicle to defend himself during the altercation.

Mpofu was arrested and charged with Assault with a Dangerous Weapon (machete).

Hammond was also charged with Assault with a Dangerous Weapon (joint venture).

According to the victim, the two men chased him and a friend while swinging the machete.

There were no injuries and witnesses were interviewed at the scene.

Both men are being held at the Wareham Police Department pending bail and will be arrainged Monday, Aug. 4 at the Wareham 4th District Court.
