WAREHAM – A 17-year-old Wareham male is in serious condition following a crash early Saturday morning that began when the victim allegedly sideswiped a car on Glen Charlie Road in East Wareham.

Wareham police said another motorist reported being hit by the 17-year-old’s car that was being operated erratically just before 4:30 a.m.

The reporting motorist remained behind the erratic motor vehicle and reported various locations to police, as the vehicle traveled onto Rte. 25 North to 495 North, then to Rte. 195, where it took the Wareham exit and headed north to the Wareham Crossing Mall.

The vehicle was spotted by Sergeant Michael Smith as it traveled with no lights through the plaza and headed to West Wareham at a high rate of speed.

Losing sight of the vehicle, Sgt. Smith radioed ahead to patrol officers, who sighted the vehicle approximately 1 mile away in the area of Adrian’s Package Store on County Rd., where it passed without lights at a very high rate of speed.

It was then that officers learned that the operator could be a 17 year old male Wareham resident who had a suspended license.

At that point, pursuit of the vehicle was ordered to be terminated by Sgt. Smith, as the vehicle headed toward Marion westbound on County Road. Within seconds of the termination, the vehicle crashed in the area of 491 County Rd., just beyond Adrian’s Package Store.

Police said the vehicle sustained extensive damage as a result of skidding off the roadway and striking several trees.

The operator of the car who has not been identified as this time, was found lying in the roadway with injuries.

He was transported to Rhode Island Hospital in serious condition by Wareham  EMS personnel. There were no passengers in the vehicle at the time of the collision, and there are no other reported injuries as a result of this incident.

The investigation in ongoing.
