Wastewater is on Ballot for Orleans

election boxORLEANS  – Orleans is one of seven Cape Cod towns holding elections Tuesday. On the ballot for Orleans voters will be a Proposition 2 1/2 question for funding for studies about wastewater.

Orleans Selectman John Hodgson said the ballot questions asks for funds for studies in three areas: the Tri-Town Septic Facility, the vision for possible sewers in downtown, and low cost solutions to clean up water bodies.

While sewer ballot questions have failed in past years, Hodgson said the town is no longer just looking at sewer options because of a change in the way regulators on the county, state and federal levels look at the issue.

The so-called 208 Plan that the Cape Cod Commission is preparing for the state in conjunction with Cape towns is exploring a range of alternatives for removing nitrogen  and cleaning up the peninsula’s water bodies.

Among those alternatives is working with neighboring towns to clean shared water bodies, he said.

Polls are open Tuesday in Orleans and six other Cape towns from 7 am and 8 pm.
