Waters Considering Return to 9th Congressional Race as Independent

Alan Waters of Mashpee is running as a Republican for the Cape and Islands State Senate seat..

MASHPEE – A Republican who recently dropped out of the race for the 9th Congressional District is re-thinking his decision.

Allen Waters of Mashpee told the CapeCod.com NewsCenter Tuesday that he may re-enter the race as an independent candidate.

Waters said he would be a “moderately conservative candidate,” and has already changed his voting status to unenrolled with the Mashpee Town Clerk’s office.

When he left the race earlier this month, Waters cited the financial challenge of running against an incumbent as a reason.

“As a black conservative and a political populist, I most want to represent “regular” folks who are concerned that their needs are no longer important in the bigger picture of our national politics,” said Waters in an emailed statement.

He also said he wanted to be a “real voice” for the small business community.

“I believe that true free enterprise is the way out of poverty and to strengthen the middle class. I will be a champion of all people who want to improve their financial position through education and training, personal labor, and investment in America,” he said.

Other candidates in the race include incumbent Democrat William Keating of Bourne and Republicans Mark Alliegro of Falmouth and Thomas O’Malley of Marshfield.

The 9th Congressional District includes all of Cape Cod, the Islands and portions of the South Shore and South Coast.
