WELLFLEET – The Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary has re-established a bird banding station in Wellfleet Bay to study the migration of songbirds.
Mist nets are set up during spring and fall migrations on sanctuary property. The nets are managed by Licensed Master Bander James Junda. The sanctuary is inviting the public learn about banding methods and the information that comes from the research. Don’t miss the chance to also meet Junda and the rest of the bird banding team.
Participants will be able to view the banding process and see live birds up-close. The sanctuary says they cannot guarantee live birds will be observed in-the-hand for the sake of the welfare of the birds.
The sanctuary has a long history of using banding to monitor bird populations, most notably Dr. Oliver Austin’s research between 1928 and 1958.
Witness bird research in action on Saturday, October 20 from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. at Wellfleet Bay. Both adult and children members of the wildlife sanctuary will be admitted for $7 while non-members pay a $9 admission fee. Pre-registration for the event is required.
