WELLFLEET – Sea turtle stranding season is underway on Cape Cod and the Mass Audubon Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary will hold a Sea Turtle Open House Thanksgiving Weekend.

Attendees will find out why hundreds of sea turtles strand on the Cape’s beaches in the fall.

They will also learn more about sea turtle conservation efforts on Cape Cod, the work that is done to save as many of them as possible and what this year’s stranding season could be like.

The open house is Saturday, November 26 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The event will feature activities for families including a touch table with turtle shells and skulls, a tour of the wet lab, stories and games for children and a photo exhibit about Wellfleet Bay’s sea turtle program.

There will also be lectures for adults, beach walks to search for stranded turtles at 9 a.m. and noon and a screening of the film, “Turtle: Then Incredible Journey, from 2:30 to 4 p.m.

The event is free with sanctuary admission.
