NANTUCKET – From massive flocks of Long-tailed Ducks and a diverse array of gulls to unusual waterfowl, Nantucket is well-known for its winter birding.
Join the Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary in January for an overnight visit to the island at the time of year when people are scarce and birds are abundant.
The trip will include sea-birding on the ferry, watching the impressive daily flight of thousands of Long-tailed Ducks at dusk, exploring birding “hot spots” on the island, and chasing after any on-island rarities.
Joel Wagner has been a seasonal naturalist with Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary since 2017. He is a graduate of Penn State with a major in Outdoor Recreation, Parks and Tourism Management with emphasis in Environmental Interpretation. He is an avid and excellent birder.
The trip to Nantucket is scheduled for January 12 through January 13. Members pay $560 for admission while nonmembers pay $610.
Advance registration is required and is accepted online or over the phone. Payment in full is due upon registration. Upon registration you will receive a confirmation letter including a tentative trip itinerary and a participant information form which needs to be completed and returned at least one week prior to the start of the trip.
Lodging will be at the Chestnut House located downtown at 3 Chestnut Street. We have reserved entire inn for then night. Suites accommodate two or three guests. Private rooms are not available. Please indicate any roommate preferences on your participant information form.
Program fee includes brown-bag lunches. Breakfast and dinner are not included.
If the trip must be cancelled due to low enrollment you will be informed at least two weeks prior to the start date of the trip.
