WELLFLEET – It’s opening week for the Wellfleet Harbor Actors Theater summer season.

The performing arts center is known for its cutting edge productions and a deep connection with “the First Lady of American Theater,” Julie Harris.

This season, the theater’s 33rd, will open with “This is Our Youth,” a coming of age story written by Kenneth Lonergan, who won an Oscar for his Manchester by the Sea screenplay.

Executive Director Christopher Ostrum said many theatergoers will able to identify with the characters.

“I think anybody who’s bridged those awkward years from about 17 to 19, anybody who’s had to ask themselves ‘who am I, who are my friends, what happened to my friends?’ and had to confront the fact that people change and they don’t always change in the way you expect,” he said.

Ostrum said seeing live theater is a special communal experience.

“It gives us a chance to see and feel and experience something they can’t experience on your own,” he said.

“You live through the audience’s reaction. You live through the actors on stage.”
