Wellfleet Ocean Week to Take Place October 9-16

litterWELLFLEET – The Wellfleet Recycling Committee is hosting Wellfleet Ocean Week starting on Sunday and running until October 16.

“More Ocean, Less Plastic” is the theme of Wellfleet Ocean Week, a week-long series of environmental events on the Outer Cape with Marcus Eriksen and Anna Cummins, who are the founders of the 5 Gyres Institute.

Events start on Sunday with a talk on plastic pollution by Eriksen and continue on Monday with Wellfleet CoastSweep, a plastic paradise film screening and a tour of Chopper Young’s oyster grant on Friday.

A ‘Tackling Marine Pollution” presentation and panel will be held on October 15 at the Wellfleet Public Library from 1-2:30 p.m.

The OysterFest tent will host the 5 Gyres crew on October 15-16 and will give participants a chance to learn more and engage in “More Ocean, Less Plastic”.

Participants will also get to learn about the sea creature sculptures in the “Plastic in our Oceans: Food for Thought” art exhibit for children outside Preservation Hall.

And the week of festivities ends on October 16 at the Wellfleet Public Library with the film screening of “Smog of the Sea”.

The short film screening will be on the latest 5 Gyres Institute research and will presented by Eriksen.
