Wellfleet OysterFest Returns for 16th Year This Weekend

oyster-1WELLFLEET – The 16th Annual Wellfleet OysterFest is expected to attract thousands to the Outer Cape this weekend.

The two-day family festival runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day and celebrates the town’s famous oysters and clams.

There are a number of activities at the festival, including a fine arts and crafts show, film screenings, educational programs, walking tours and a road race.

“People all the way down to Yarmouth tell me that they feel the surge in their business as a result of the OysterFest but then it also has this benefit of being able to support and give back to the community,” said Wellfleet SPAT Executive Director Michelle Insley.

The main attraction of the event is the Oyster Shucking competition.

The OysterFest also brings awareness to a number of environmental and marine issues.

This year’s event will highlight marine pollution and what the public can do to help.

Insley added that OysterFest has been a strong addition to the community since its inception 16 years ago.

“It’s a local event that people just came together to just enjoy each other’s company and celebrate what everybody has been working for all year and so it still retains that,” said Insley.

OysterFest is produced by Wellfleet SPAT, Shellfish Promotion and Tasting, Inc.

Proceeds from the fest fund the non-profit organization’s educational mission, which includes a college scholarship program, community grant awards and initiatives to help the shellfishing industry.
