WELLFLEET – Despite making the decision to close the Cahoon Hollow Beach parking lot to the public this summer, Wellfleet town officials are issuing a request for proposals for those interested in maintaining and leasing the area.
DPW, police, fire and other town officials recommended the lot not be reopened, due to safety concerns.
A heavy rain storm last summer opened a large hole in the parking lot and dune which consumed a small car.
“If no one replies with a bid, we will just gate off the parking lot and then it would just be used by town employees, which basically means by the lifeguards that work the beach down there,” said Wellfleet Town Administrator Daniel Hoort.
The Beachcomber restaurant is located directly west of the town lot.
Town officials have decided to no longer use town money to stabilize the lot but will maintain Cahoon Hollow Road and foot access to the beach.
“My expectation is that somebody who would want to lease that lot would probably, most likely want to maintain it as well,” said Hoort.
The town will not be providing a shuttle this summer from the White Crest Beach parking lot.
Hoort said that the town is trying to replace the parking lot to erosion on Ocean View Drive.
One idea is to expand the White Crest Beach parking lot from 200 spaces to about 460, which would replace most of the spaces lost so far.
